4 in 10 Kids See Adult Material
| "While exposure to pornography online is beginning to be a normative experience, installing filtering software on your computer will help delay the initial exposure"
David S. Bickham, a staff scientist at the Center on Media and Child Health
More than 40 percent of teens and preteens surveyed say they've recently come across nudity and pornography on the Internet, and most say they weren't looking for it, according to a study released today.
Those numbers were highest among older boys: Nearly four in 10 males aged 16-17 said they'd gone to adult sites on purpose within the past year, compared to just eight percent of girls at the same age.

Teens can get tangled in the Web
| "Just last week, a 14-year-old girl wound up at the home of Christopher Fanning, 22, in Mead. Weld County sheriff's deputies arrested him for allegedly having sex with her. He is a registered sex offender.
At first glance, MySpace.com looks like one of those harmless Web sites that will make you wonder why teens blow most of their free time on it.
There are lots of goofy graphics, long lists of friends and places where you can check out new bands. It's the Web's equivalent to a breakfast cereal -- sugary and colorful but not exactly nutritious.
And yet, if you take a longer look, you'll see some causes for concern.
That's why we're urging parents to linger a bit.
Just last week, a 14-year-old girl wound up at the home of Christopher Fanning, 22, in Mead. Weld County sheriff's deputies arrested him for allegedly having sex with her. He is a registered sex offender.
Even if Fanning didn't have sex with her -- and let's assume, in that guilty-until-proven-innocent mode we probably should employ here, that he didn't -- just the fact that the girl was at his house holds all kinds of tragic possibilities.
New Charges Possible for ER Doc
| "Lebowitz was charged with reckless conduct for not telling that teen that he was HIV positive.
Dr. Adam Lebowitz' life changed drastically on November 2. The Grady Hospital Emergency Room physician had gone to the home of a 15-year-old Coweta County boy, allegedly to have sex. Instead he was surrounded by sheriff's investigators. Inside his SUV they found some sleeping bags, condoms and lubrication oils.
The deputies were waiting because they'd been alerted by the teenage boy's mother. She called them when her son showed her some suggestive e-mails from Lebowitz. Lebowitz apparently met the teen through the boy's MySpace website on the internet.
Myspace and Murder
| "On social network sites, those sides interact. Victims' buddies can howl at killers' cousins, and the cousins can scream back. "All the old social relationship models and theories don't apply anymore,""
Charles Figley, head of Florida State University's Traumatology Institute.
3 victims of a gangland murder have ties and leave ghostly memories on myspace.

Varo, 22, was dead – shot in the head as he sat at his computer. Varo's friend Darren Christian, 28, and one of Christian's friends, 21-year-old Lindy Cochran, had also been killed in the same gangland style.
Daniel Varo, known for fixing cars and spending many hours online was found shot to death right next to his computer. It was as if he had just fallen off the chair in front of the computer that he spent so many hours on. There was a single bullet wound to the head. Darren Christian was found in the living room with his ID and a single piece of paper on his back. He also had a single gunshot wound to the head in a very simliar fashion to the one that killed his friend Daniel. Lyndy Cochran was found almost perpendicular to Darren's body and she too was killed by a single shot to her head.
'Cyber cops' warn parents of dangers on the Internet
| "It is pretty easy for kids to get online and share personal information on sites like MySpace.com or Friendster.com, or programs like AOL Instant Messenger, where online predators can easily access that information to contact them.
Detective Christian Kohlmeyer
In the Information Age, parents must be made aware of dangers on and off the street. Ask any "cyber cop."
The Macomb Area Computer Enforcement Task Force (MACE), affectionately known as cyber cops, gave a presentation to the Northwest Zero Tolerance Coalition about Internet safety, which includes the dangers of online predators.
Ninety percent of the time, the department deals with fraud cases, from e-mail to auction frauds.
They also arrest online sexual predators, sometimes working with the FBI.
Well-known GOP activist held in sex-predator sting
| "The charges Larry Corrigan is facing are extremely serious and should be thoroughly investigated. Anyone guilty of such crimes should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law so that our children are protected from the threats sexual predators pose."
U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert
Larry Corrigan, a well-known activist in local Republican politics as a backer of U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert and King County Prosecuting Attorney Norm Maleng, was arrested Wednesday in an Internet sting for allegedly trying to arrange sex with a 13-year-old girl.
Corrigan was the director of financial operations at the prosecutor's office for more than 25 years and was deputy treasurer in Reichert's 1997 and 2001 runs for King County sheriff. He was also a supporter without an official role in Reichert's congressional campaigns.
According to the Seattle Police Department, Corrigan, 54, of Seattle, was chatting online with an undercover police officer who was posing as a 13-year-old girl when he agreed to meet the minor at a Capitol Hill video store on Broadway for sex.
He was booked into King County Jail around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday for investigation of the attempted rape of a child and communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.
Networking websites 'feeding grounds' for paedophiles
| ""They have one thing in common and that is to sexually corrupt a child.""
Detective Superintendent Alastair Jeffrey
Social networking websites are "feeding grounds" for sex offenders who prey on children, a Met Police investigator said today.
In the last seven months the Met has arrested 22 suspects through its covert internet investigations, several of whom are now in prison, according to a briefing this morning.
Fourteen of those arrested were identified through a single operation in which they approached a police officer who was posing online as a child.
"Without a doubt, all the meeting at the moment is taking place on networking sites," said Detective Constable Jonathan Taylor.
He is one of the Met's six covert internet investigators at the Child Abuse Investigation Command, which targets child abuse of all kinds across London.
Yet though he appears online as a 12-year-old girl, with profiles set up on social networking sites as well as Yahoo and MSN, he has found entrapment is never an issue.
"There's no need [for it]. They come to me.They can just say to you 'Will you be my friend?'," he said. "They don't realise I'm a 40-year-old man."
